Location: St. Louis, Missouri
Partner: Grand Center Arts Academy
Size: 21,280 SF

Overview: Vacant since 1981, this turn-of-the-century building was overwhelmed with rapidly deteriorating conditions, masking the details of its original glory. Due to decades of poor maintenance, the interior plaster and structural masonry was heavily damaged and in need of repair. Realizing the value of this historic property, New + Found partnered with Grand Center Arts Academy to prepare a redevelopment plan that could restore the building to its former glory.

Almost every inch of the building underwent significant restoration, resulting in a beautiful space with the perfect blend of historic detail and modern amenities. New + Found worked closely with several contractors to salvage and make more than 30 different plaster molds. The building now houses a 650-seat theater with updated bathroom facilities, a new stair and elevator tower providing access to all levels, an outdoor courtyard, and three new classrooms. In addition to its regular use by students of Grand Center Arts Academy, countless other visitors have enjoyed the power of art within the walls of Sun Theatre.

Achievements:

  • Silver Award, Building Design + Construction Annual Reconstruction Awards
